British Institute of Innkeeping's National Innovation in Training Awards return

The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) crowned the winners of its National Innovation in Training Awards (NITAs) this week at a ceremony held at Café de Paris in London’s West End.

This year marked a return for the NITAs which were first launched in 1991 but then cancelled following the 2012 edition.

BII’s chief executive, Mike Clist, who was responsible for reintroducing the awards, said: “The NITAs are a celebration of the most successful individuals and businesses in the licensed retail market today. Our finalists have shown that they value, support and champion their people by continuing to invest in and develop their training programmes.

“It's vital that we recognise, reward and share their successes so that we can encourage further innovation in our fantastic industry for years to come.

“The use of new technology and the holistic approach to the way they design their training programmes, has benefitted their businesses from the ground up and directly impacted on financial performances, growth and staff retention - we congratulate them all."

Winners on the night included Bill’s Restaurants for Best Managed Training Programme (Companies over 50 outlets), Oakman Inns for Best Casual Dining Training Programme and Punch Taverns for Best Training Programme (Leased & Tenanted Companies over 200 outlets).

Steve Dando, Punch interim chief executive, said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition, particularly against such stiff competition.

“At Punch we are committed to helping our publicans grow their businesses and ‘Art of the Possible’ has demonstrated the genuine value that publicans derive from the programme and their motivation to make continual and tangible improvements to their business.”

Oakman Inns’ chief Peter Borg-Neal, said: “I am delighted for this recognition of the work Oakman has undertaken under the guidance and inspiration of our HR Director, Jill Scatchard and Learning and Development Manager, Laura Douglas.

"We have already felt the impact on staffing of the Brexit decision and the fall in the value of sterling, so we are all having to work much harder and very quickly to enthuse, recruit and train the people we need for tomorrow.”
