Gourmet burger chain Byron Hamburgers Ltd, which trades as Byron, has appointed Nick Young as its new chief operating officer as it looks to get back to the top of the market.

The news of the appointment comes less than a week after it was revealed the firm was considering shutting down some of its restaurants.

Recent company figures showed the company’s profits last year fell to £194,000, down from £5 million the year before, while its debts were estimated to be in the region of £45 million.

Despite these numbers, Young said: “I’m joining Byron at a very exciting time. There is a huge amount of passion within the team and I’m looking forward to working with all our restaurants, continuing to evolve the outstanding service that Byron is famous for.

“The team’s desire to be at the top of this highly competitive market convinced me that Byron is the right place for me and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Young was formerly the operations director of Pizza Express from 2006-2011 where he was credited with playing a key part in driving strategic development and leading the operations team through a period of accelerated growth.

His CV also includes time as operations director for Spirit Pubs where he was part of the management team that transformed the business, culminating with a record-breaking year in 2015.

Young joins Byron having most recently been with French restaurant and bakery chain, Aubaine, where he was chief executive.
