Casual dining operators to attend sugar summit on Thursday
20/03/2017 - 09:58
Representatives from McDonalds, JD Wetherspoon, Stonegate Pubs and Leon Restaurants will discuss how to cut children’s sugar intake at a sugar summit this Thursday held in Parliament.
Written by Andrew McClean
The event was setup by Rend Platings, founder of Sugarwise, the certification standard for low sugar food and drinks.
Platings said: “I called this summit to raise awareness of just how many lower sugar options there are that haven't yet broken out into mainstream retailers. Perhaps, by bringing everyone together to have a conversation, we can move forward as a nation and rise to the challenge of how best to feed ourselves and our families.”
Platings will feature on a panel that also includes: Keith Vaz MP; Cambridge obesity specialist and Horizon presenter, Dr Giles Yeo; editor in chief of Netmums, Annie O'Leary; GP Dr David Unwin; and Lord Brooke, Baron of Alverthorpe.
The #DontTaxHealthy campaign, which aims to make healthy choices more affordable, is also on the agenda and will explore positive initiatives for retailers and pub chains, and discuss the role of nutritional labelling in the public health debate.
