The 15-strong pub company, Upham Group Plc, has announced a “strong Christmas trading period” for the five weeks to 31 December, with sales up 6.5% on last year at £2.3million.

With food accounting for more than half of the group’s total gross sales, it took ‘just above’ £1.2million having sold 6,460 Christmas lunches and dinners throughout the month. Total drink sales came in at £0.8million, and saw staff serve 83,880 pints, 10,161 pints of Punter and £123,000 worth of non-alcoholic drinks across its portfolio.

Upham also celebrated its “highest grossing sales day in its history” on New Year’s Eve, taking £112,000 and serving 1,326 glasses of prosecco throughout the night. The week from Christmas Day to NYE also marked the first time that sales exceeded £0.5million in a single week.

Chief executive Chris Phillips said: “This strong Christmas performance rounds off a good year for the Upham Group, despite a difficult trading environment for the sector.

“2017 was a productive year - in addition to pursuing our pub acquisition strategy, we also launched our first ever craft beer, which continued to sell extremely well throughout December.

“I would like to thank the teams at all our pubs for their fantastic Christmas menus, as well as the rest of our staff who made this such a successful few weeks. We enter 2018 with good momentum, and look forward to welcoming even more customers over the course of the year.”
