The Counter, the Los Angeles build-your-own-burger restaurant, has opened its first UK site at The Quay in Glasgow with plans to open throughout England and Scotland.

The new site is being managed by property development group, Daniel Johns Group, who owns the master franchise license in the UK.

Khalid Iqbal, chairman of Daniel Johns Group, said: “We are proud to open The Counter in Glasgow and bring the ultimate burger experience from LA to the UK. We have exciting plans for developing The Counter in England and Scotland committing £20m to this new venture over the next five years.”

The Counter offers a checklist-style menu of over 100 ingredients, which it says can create a million possible combinations. It also offers a selection of handmade ice cream shakes, craft beers and wine.

Jeff Weinstein, founder and co-CEO of The Counter, added: “We built The Counter as a space for guests to create burgers without limits and to have fun in the process. It is great to see this concept brought to life in Glasgow and we’re excited to work with Khalid Iqbal and Daniel Johns Group to expand the offering throughout the UK.”

The Counter has more the 40 US and international locations and was founded in 2003 by Weinstein in partnership with Craig Albert.
