This month, Eat Out sat down with Ray Hall, managing director at independent catering supplier, RH Hall, to gain insight into the company and hear more about its future aspirations.

What have been the challenges and main drivers at RH Hall?

We continue expanding our Food Solutions sector – working with our approved dealer network to review the changing requirements of foodservice operators and offer ‘fixes’ to many of the issues seen in today’s commercial kitchens. We have many important core values and a real passion to be the best. In an increasingly competitive marketplace, the main challenge is ensuring people are aware of the added value we offer. Brexit has also had a massive impact, particularly as we import many products from Europe and the USA – we have worked hard with suppliers and customers to ensure we all maintain much needed margin!

What are your best sellers in the casual dining sector?

Without a doubt, our biggest successes to date have been working with accelerated cooking products, particularly microwaves. We have experience in delivering multiple roll outs to a number of nationwide chains. The Sharp range of professional microwaves continues to be the choice of many operators, particularly the highly efficient and extra heavy duty 1900W models. In addition, the Maestrowave Combi Chef 7 is becoming increasingly popular where operators need a versatile menu in a compact space – with very consistent results!

What advice are you offering to operators?

Always consider the experience of the equipment partner you are working with, as well as the services they can offer. Whilst a competitive price will always be a factor, a supplier should offer a wealth of other services, such as: menu development, bespoke design, training, pre-commissioning, installation/delivery, after sales service/maintenance and perhaps even full project management. Understanding of the industry, the wide range of equipment available and the individual business operation is crucial to ensure successful implementation of any project – small or large – and many operators will benefit from working with a supplier who can allow them to simply ‘switch on and start serving’.

Are you working on any partnerships/schemes with any chains?

Most recently, we have been working with major nationwide chains such as Costa, Nando’s and Morrisons. We also have a history of 15+ years working with Pret a Manger, currently supplying both their front and back of house fabrications, exclusively to their design. In fact, you are likely to find RH Hall kit in the kitchen of every high street brand! Our Food Solutions and National Account teams work extensively with both supply partners and our approved dealer network, to offer full project management – from initial enquiry to store roll out. We have proven experience in delivering these large-scale projects, both on-time and on budget!

What are your aspirations for the next 12 months?

Our focus continues on promoting and expanding our Food Solutions services, hoping to become known as the no. 1 ‘problem solver’ in the industry! Our vision is to be the ‘best, most trusted choice’. We also support product innovation, our Maestrowave iWave® range being a prime example. Using the latest microwave technology, the system provides a unique, fully encrypted, barcoded meal solution, suitable for many applications including hospital ward service, retail vending outlets and more. The product is a world first, available exclusively through RH Hall. We have many exciting products to launch in the next year, including a unique soup-serve system, new iWave Microwave and a High Speed Cooker. Watch this space…!
