MSC-certified hake on the M&J Seafood menu

29/07/2016 - 07:00
MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified Cornish gill-net hake is now on the menu at M&J Seafood, giving caterers another locally sourced, sustainable whitefish alternative.

The Cornish vessels certified to catch MSC Cornish hake including Ajax, skippered by Alan Dwan, already use a larger mesh size than required by EU regulations, which allows juvenile fish to escape and helps safeguard stocks for the future.

Obtaining the valuable certification has been a long process but landings of hake from the local boats in the fleet have been steadily increasing.

“We are delighted to be on board with Cornish hake, the only hake fishery in the UK to have achieved MSC certification,” says: ‘Skipper’s Catch’ Buying Manager, Phil Byrne. “The initiative means that we now have a full chain of custody that allows us to supply caterers with a top quality product with first rate credentials."
