Obesity in Scotland to be discussed at conference

Members of the Scottish Government, Food Standards Scotland and Cancer Research UK will be among the speakers at an Edinburgh conference to discuss obesity problems in Scotland.

The seminar will discuss the Scottish Governments’ soon-to-be-published Diet and Obesity Strategy and Physical Activity Delivery Plan, as well as the challenges associated with the introduction of the soft drinks industry levy.

Keynote addresses at the networking event will come from Aileen Campbell MSP, Minister for Public Health and Sport, Elspeth Macdonald, Food Standards Scotland deputy chief executive, and Sue Davies, chief policy advisor for Which?.

Representatives from the food and drink industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and suppliers are all expected to be in attendance to listen in on the discussions which will include 'Tackling challenges for industry- reformulation and consumer acceptance', and 'The role of retailers and marketers in promoting healthier lifestyles'.

Other areas in the agenda for discussion include assessing the new strategy and current policy landscape and assesing evidence behind restrictions on price and promotion.
