Pret A Manger's HR director, Andrea Wareham, has told the Economic Affairs Committee that just one in 50 applicants to the company are British.

Wareham was giving evidence to the select committee on Wednesday and revealed that 65% of Pret's workers are EU nationals, which does not include British people, and their competitors have similar percentages.

She said: "If I had to fill our vacancies with British workers only, it would not be possible...because of a lack of applications."

Wareham added that she did not believe that increasing pay would not 'do the trick' in increasing British applicants as Pret already pays above the national living wage, has a great benefits package and offers fantastic careers.

JD Wetherspoon founder and chair, Tim Martin also gave evidence to the committee, which included Lord Darling. Watch the video here.
