UK restaurant and pub operator Mitchells & Butlers has reported that like-for-like sales over its core three-week December period grew by 3.9% compared to 2016, with the company recording best ever revenue figures for a Christmas Day.

The All Bar One and Toby Carvery owner sold 225,000 meals on the 25th, helping it increase its lfl Christmas Day sales by 5.4%.

Over the last seven weeks, lfl sales growth was 1.6% and 2.2% in the year-to-date.

Mitchells & Butlers chief Phil Urban said the company was continuing to make good progress in building a more balanced pub estate, in particular by "premiumising" its sites.

The group have opened two new sites and completed 114 conversations and remodels during its current financial year.

It expects to have completed around 270 remodels and conversions by the year’s end.

“We are pleased to have delivered continued strong trading results over the important festive period in the face of difficult weather for many of our guests, indicating the attractiveness of our offers in a competitive market,” said Urban.
